UK Government Faces Decision on Controversial Oil and Gas Fields

The UK government is set to make a decision on whether to approve two oil and gas fields, Rosebank and Jackdaw, off the coast of Scotland. The fields have been at the center of controversy for years, with environmental groups arguing that more drilling would be unconscionable and hamper efforts to cut planet-warming carbon emissions.

The government granted licenses for the fields in 2022 and 2023 but was forced to redo climate assessments after a court ruling last year. Industry bodies argue that starting production at the sites will provide jobs and improve the UK's energy security, while environmentalists say transitioning sooner to greener technologies would be better for supporting jobs.

The Rosebank oil field is expected to fill up to 500 million barrels of oil over its 25-year lifetime but increased supply does not necessarily guarantee cheaper energy bills. Prices are determined by international markets and the UK's remaining refineries are not equipped to process the heavier type of crude oil extracted from the North Sea.

The Jackdaw gas field is estimated to produce 35.8 million tonnes of carbon over its 11-year lifetime, equivalent to 90% of Scotland's emissions for 2023. Campaign groups say that displacing imported liquified natural gas with gas from the Jackdaw field would save the equivalent of four million tonnes of CO2 but this would not lower worldwide emissions as the US gas would still be sold and burned elsewhere.
