UK Oil Industry Remains Dominant Force Despite Phasing Out Fossil Fuels

The UK's complex relationship with oil is on full display as it aims to phase out fossil fuels while still producing over half a billion barrels of oil every day. The North Sea Transition Authority estimates that around 80% of this oil is sold internationally, making the UK one of the world's top exporters and consumers.

The industry remains significant, with companies like Shell, bp, and Equinor operating giant fields in the North Sea. Shell produces over 140,000 barrels of oil equivalent daily, while bp has announced its decision to withdraw from the region after more than 60 years.

Other notable players include Harbour Energy, which produces around 475,000 barrels of oil each day, and EnQuest, a specialist in late-life management of older oilfields. CNOOC, a Chinese energy giant, has become one of the most influential operators in the North Sea since its acquisition of Nexen in 2013.

As the industry evolves, companies are looking to diversify their offerings and invest in renewable energy sources. TotalEnergies has started investing in offshore wind farms and developing its portfolio of carbon capture and storage (CCS) and electric vehicle charging.
