Ukraine Backs US Proposal for Halt on Strikes on Food Export Routes
Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has expressed willingness to support US President Donald Trump's proposal for a mutual halt to strikes on critical infrastructure. This includes not only energy facilities but also food export routes and other vital infrastructure, according to Zelenskyy.
The initiative aims to de-escalate tensions between Ukraine and Russia, with Kyiv awaiting concrete details from the United States and confirmation that Moscow is prepared to comply in the long term. Including food trade routes in the potential agreement could be crucial for Ukrainian agricultural exports, which rely heavily on stable maritime and logistics infrastructure.
Farmers in both countries have a vested interest in ending strikes on port infrastructure and commercial shipping, as stable exports would allow producers to sell more of their crops and secure funds for the next planting campaign. Lower risks to ports and civilian vessels could also stabilize grain and oilseed supplies from the Black Sea region and reduce the risk of higher global food prices.
