Ukraine Conflict Drives Global Food Prices to 13-Year High
Global food prices have surged by 13% in August 2023, with wheat reaching a three-year high. This increase is largely due to sharply reduced wheat shipments and extreme weather conditions.
The Bloomberg Agriculture Spot Index, which tracks the prices of various agricultural commodities, has seen its fastest rise since July 2012. Wheat exports have been particularly affected by the conflict in Ukraine, as the country and Russia together provide over a quarter of global wheat exports.
Ukraine's agriculture ministry forecasts smaller winter wheat sowings for the 2027 season, which could further tighten supplies. The repeated Russian strikes on Ukrainian ports since July 2023 have limited Kyiv's ability to export grain, with analysts warning that this disruption could be long-lasting.
