Ukraine Drone Attack Sparks Wheat Price Surge Amid Russia-Ukraine Conflict
A drone attack by Ukrainian forces on Russian grain facilities in the port of Novorossiysk has caused significant damage and sparked a wheat-led rally in markets. The attack, which was carried out overnight, damaged several terminals and disrupted grain exports.
Russian agriculture ministry officials have announced that they are working to redirect cargo flows to ports in the Baltic and Caspian Seas as well as land routes. However, the damage to some of the facilities may take months to repair.
The escalation of fighting in the Black Sea between Russia and Ukraine has been a concern for the grain trade for weeks, but this attack is seen as a major escalation of the conflict.
In related news, the USDA lowered its estimate of Russian and Ukrainian wheat exports for 2026-27 due to logistical concerns. The agency cut Russia's estimate to 46 million metric tons from 47.5 MMT in July and Ukraine's estimate to 13.5 MMT from 14.5 MMT.
