Ukraine Grain Exports Plummet Amid Maritime Transport Chaos
Ukraine's grain exports are facing significant challenges as maritime transport difficulties have led to a substantial reduction in export volumes. At the current pace, Ukraine may end August with its lowest grain export figures since the beginning of the full-scale war, reaching only about 1.33 million tons, which is 54% less than in July this year.
The main reason for this decline has been difficulties with maritime shipments, with their share in agricultural exports dropping from 86.5% to 51.4%. As a result, rail transport has increased its role, accounting for 38.5% of export volumes, but its total volume has also decreased.
The western direction has seen an increase in grain exports through railway crossings, with approximately 250 thousand tons sent in the first 15 days of August, which is a 126% higher figure than the same period in July. However, this growth does not compensate for the significant losses in maritime port volumes.
The port of Izmail has somewhat alleviated the situation by increasing grain exports to 53.2 thousand tons, but even considering Izmail, the compensation does not exceed 19%. Rail grain exports have fallen by 68% compared to July and by 77% year-on-year.
