Ukraine Grain Market Collapses Amid Maritime Blockade
The Ukrainian grain market has faced a significant price collapse due to export problems. Denis Marchuk, deputy chairman of the All-Ukrainian Agrarian Council, explained that the main reason for this decline is the sharp reduction in opportunities to export grain abroad during the peak harvest season.
Marchuk noted that Ukraine typically exports 4 million metric tons per month, but so far, only about 500,000 metric tons have been exported via alternative routes such as the Danube, rail, and road. This is a stark contrast to the same period last year, when 1.5 million metric tons would already have been exported.
As a result of the maritime blockade, farmers are struggling to operate at a profit, with Marchuk stating that they are 'simply forced to operate at a loss' due to the inability to export their produce and cover costs such as fuel, salaries, land rent, and loan repayments.
