Ukraine Harvest Trapped in Russia's Black Sea Blockade

Ukrainian farmers are facing disaster as Russia's blockade of the Black Sea traps their harvest, threatening food supplies and economic stability.

For Serhiy Rybalko, a 57-year-old farmer in Ukraine, this year's good harvest is at risk due to the blockade. His grain storage is almost full, but he has nowhere to send his crops as exports have nearly stopped.

'There is nowhere to send this grain,' Rybalko said. 'This is a complete disaster for farmers…Finances have ground to a halt. Revenue streams have dried up. There are no exports.'

Farming accounts for 60 percent of Ukraine's export revenues, and the blockade adds pressure to the fragile wartime economy.

Ukraine supplies around 6 percent of the world’s wheat and around 11 percent of its corn, according to Denys Marchuk, deputy head of Ukraine's main farmers' union UAC.
