Ukraine Offers Help to Clean Up Algerian Nuclear Contamination

Ukraine is willing to share its expertise with Algeria to clean up sites contaminated by nuclear radiation from French nuclear tests during the colonial era. This comes as Ukraine's ambassador to Algeria, Oleksandr Voronin, revealed that his country exported 2.5 million tonnes of wheat to Algeria last year. The total wheat imports for Algeria are estimated at 9 million tonnes.

The Ukrainian diplomat highlighted the strength of relations between Algeria and Kyiv, recalling that Algeria was among the first countries to recognize Ukraine's independence in 1991. He also noted that bilateral trade reached $736 million in 2025.

However, Voronin warned that wheat prices had tripled due to the ongoing war in Ukraine, which has damaged its export infrastructure, particularly grain storage and port facilities.
