Ukraine Offers Russia Black Sea Truce Amid Global Food Supply Fears
Ukraine has proposed a truce to Russia in the Black Sea, suggesting they halt attacks on civilian targets amid growing concerns over global food supplies. The offer was transmitted by Kyiv via a third party and Ukraine is still waiting for a response from Moscow.
Russia and Ukraine are both major players in the world agriculture market, with accusations of intensified attacks on vessels used for exports fueling the crisis. Ukraine's grain exports have tumbled 76% year-over-year so far in August, with the agricultural sector warning of vast consequences for the economy if the blockade persists.
Earlier this week, Deputy Russian Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko stated that Moscow had received no formal Black Sea cease-fire proposal. However, Ukraine's move to suspend attacks on civilian targets may be an attempt to ease tensions and stabilize food supplies.
