Ukraine Offers Russia Truce in Black Sea Amid Fears of Global Food Crisis
Ukraine has extended an offer to Russia to halt attacks on civilian targets in the Black Sea, according to a source familiar with the matter. The proposal was transmitted by Kyiv via a third party and is still awaiting a response from Moscow.
The Black Sea region has become a critical battleground for both countries as they vie for control of grain exports, which are crucial to their economies. Russia and Ukraine are major players in the global agriculture market, with Ukraine being one of the world's largest wheat exporters.
Russia has repeatedly targeted Ukrainian ports and vessels, forcing Kyiv to turn to alternative shipment routes. In July, many shipowners halted stops at Odesa port, a key hub for grain exports, after Russian strikes on dozens of ships.
The current de facto blockade of Black Sea ports has sent Ukrainian grain exports tumbling 76% year-on-year so far in August, according to Reuters. The agricultural sector is warning of vast consequences for the economy if the situation persists.
