Ukraine Pursues Long-Term LNG Supplies from Canada
Ukraine has started talks with Canada on a potential 30-year agreement for the supply of liquefied natural gas (LNG). The Ministry of Energy in Ukraine has proposed establishing an 'energy bridge' to its Canadian counterparts.
According to Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal, the agreement would provide a long-term source of gas supplies from Canada, reducing Ukraine's dependence on volatile markets and strengthening its energy security during the war and post-war recovery.
The proposed deal comes as part of Ukraine's efforts to diversify its gas supply routes. The country is also in talks with other LNG suppliers, including Argent LNG, which signed a memorandum of understanding with Naftogaz in July this year.
Canada's west coast saw the launch of its first export terminal, LNG Canada, in 2025, with a planned export capacity of 14 million metric tons of LNG per year. Another project, Ksi Lisims LNG, is set to begin construction on the country's northwest coast in 2027 and will have a capacity of 12 million metric tons of LNG per year.
