Ukraine-Russia Conflict Sparks Global Food Security Crisis

The ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine is posing a significant threat to global food security, particularly in Africa and the Middle East. According to Russia's Union of Grain Exporters and Producers, Ukrainian drone attacks on Russian ships and port infrastructure could disrupt Black Sea grain exports, driving up prices and exacerbating the crisis.

The union warned that a complete blockage of export corridors in the Black Sea basin could soon lead to a physical shortage of grain, triggering a protracted global crisis. It estimated that the shortfall in supply of Russian wheat to other countries this season could reach 30-35 million metric tons, accounting for around 15% of total global wheat trade.

The price of wheat is expected to rise to between US$340 and US$370 per ton, with a potential increase above US$400. This would lead to widespread food inflation, affecting the poorest countries most severely and potentially triggering famine.
