Ukraine Seeks Ceasefire to Save Grain Exports
Ukraine has proposed a ceasefire to Russia in an effort to ensure grain exports through the Black Sea, according to Finway. The proposal was made amid rising tensions between the two countries over attacks on infrastructure related to grain transportation.
The threat of disruption to global food prices is significant, with around 90% of Ukraine's wheat, corn, and sunflower seeds being exported through the Black Sea. Ukrainian farmers are already feeling the strain, with 75% fewer grain exports in August compared to last year.
Farmer Serhiy Rybalko described the situation as 'practically full' storage facilities due to difficulties in shipping abroad. The Ministry of Agriculture warns of a potential shortage of storage space for up to 11 million tons of grain, which could impact the next agricultural season.
