Ukraine Strikes Russian Gas Facility Over 3,000 km Away in Siberia
A new record has been set for Ukraine's military in the ongoing war against Russia. The country's Special Operations Forces carried out a deep strike into Russia, targeting a natural gas facility over 3,000 kilometers away from the Ukrainian border.
The Novy Urengoy Gas Condensate Treatment Plant (GCTP) in northwestern Siberia was attacked on September 9, marking the first time Ukraine's forces have struck the Yamalo-Nenets region. The plant processes 19.5 million tons of crude oil and natural gas annually and produces diesel fuel and other petroleum products for Russia's military.
The Ukrainian drone used to carry out the strike was produced by Fire Point, a weapons manufacturer that produces the Flamingo missile. The attack also targeted the nearby Purovsky Gas Condensate Processing Plant.
The success of this long-range UAV has raised concerns in Europe about Russia's energy infrastructure being vulnerable to Ukrainian strikes. Alexander Kirk, sanctions campaigner at Urgewald, urged EU countries to impose economic penalties against Russian LNG 'before potential kinetic sanctions are applied to the Russian gas infrastructure supplying the European market.'
