Ukraine Strikes Russian Grain Facilities, Fueling Global Food Price Concerns
A devastating attack by Ukraine on Russian grain facilities has sent shockwaves through global food markets. The strikes, which targeted two major export terminals in the Black Sea port of Novorossiysk, have killed three people and injured 24 others.
The Union Grain Company reported damage to one of its facilities, while Demetra Holding's terminal was also hit, with both handling almost 16 million tons of grain annually. The attacks have prompted warnings that the disruption could add to pressure on global grain prices, which have already surged amid ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia.
Ukraine's military claimed responsibility for the strikes, saying they used a combination of rockets and drones to target Russian warships docked in Novorossiysk. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky hailed the operation as 'unique,' stating that the occupying fleet and its supporting infrastructure would not be safe as long as Russia's aggression continues.
Russia, however, accused Ukraine of targeting grain export infrastructure to foment chaos in global food markets. The country's Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Maria Zakharova, said this move would worsen shortages of grain and fertilizers, drive up global food prices, and harm countries in the Global South and East.
