Ukraine Targets Russian Refineries and 'Shadow Fleet' in Escalating Black Sea Conflict
Ukraine's military has launched attacks on Russian refineries and a 'shadow fleet' of vessels in the Black Sea, causing damage and disruption to oil shipments. A fire broke out at Russia's Ilsky oil refinery in the Krasnodar region after Ukrainian drone debris hit the facility, injuring five people.
The refinery has been targeted repeatedly since Ukraine's campaign against Russian energy infrastructure began, with the most recent attack occurring in July. The Ilsky facility has a design capacity of 6.6 million tons per year and is one of several refineries that have been damaged or destroyed by Ukrainian attacks.
In addition to the refinery, Ukraine has also targeted vessels in the Black Sea, with reports suggesting that 12 ships from Russia's 'shadow fleet' were hit during an operation between August 1 and August 8. The attacked vessels were not identified, but Ukraine has agreed not to target certain non-Russian oil tankers and infrastructure critical to exports of Kazakh crude oil.
The attacks have put further strain on Black Sea shipping, with Ukraine's Agriculture Ministry warning that farm shipments could fall by as much as 64% in the 2026-27 marketing year due to disruptions to the Odesa port route. Wheat exports are projected to drop by 53%, highlighting the impact of the conflict on global food supplies.
