Ukraine's Agricultural Exports Fall Short Amid Logistical Challenges

Ukraine's agricultural exports in August fell far short of potential output due to logistical challenges and export restrictions. According to Minister Taras Vysotsky, only one-third of Ukraine's potential agricultural output was exported in August.

The country exported 1.42 million metric tons of grains, oilseeds, and their products in the first 26 days of August, which is just 21% of the potential demand for that period. The majority of exports went through rail and the Danube route, with road transport accounting for only about 80,000 metric tons.

The minister noted that while the government has taken measures to support farmers, including extending the deadline for repatriating foreign currency proceeds from exports, export restrictions and high logistics costs will likely impact farmers' plans for the fall planting season. Vysotsky predicted a reduction in planted acreage this fall, particularly for winter wheat.

Despite the challenges, lending to the agricultural sector continues to grow, with agricultural producers receiving approximately ₴2 billion in loans over the past week. The total loan portfolio for the sector now stands at ₴105 billion, up from ₴80 billion last year.
