Ukraine's Agriculture Minister Dismisses Food Shortage Fears Despite Logistical Challenges
Russian strikes and blockades are causing significant logistical challenges for Ukraine's agricultural industry, but Minister of Agriculture Taras Vysotsky assures that food shortages will not occur due to domestic production meeting national consumption needs.
Ukraine produces the vast majority of its own food supply, with over 24 million metric tons of wheat exceeding its domestic consumption of approximately 6 million metric tons. Vysotsky stated that while logistics challenges may lead to temporary product shortages or reduced variety on store shelves, Ukraine is currently facing no food shortages.
The agriculture minister listed several products for which Ukraine is fully self-sufficient, including grain, flour, and baked goods, as well as vegetables like potatoes and carrots. However, he noted that Ukraine relies heavily on imports for exotic fruits, coffee, cocoa beans, ocean and saltwater fish, and rice.
