Ukrainian Attack Hobbles Russian Grain Exports Amid Global Food Supply Concerns

A Ukrainian drone and missile strike on Novorossiysk, Russia's key port city on the Black Sea, has halted operations at two major grain terminals. The attack, which occurred on Wednesday night, resulted in three fatalities and 24 injuries, including an eight-year-old child. Ukrainian President Zelensky hailed the operation as a 'unique' strike against the Russian naval base.

The damage to the grain export terminals could severely impact global food supplies, particularly in Africa, where Russia is the world's largest wheat exporter. The country ships most of its exports via its Black Sea ports, including Novorossiysk. In July, Ukraine indicated that it had suspended attacks on oil tankers using Novorossiysk after a request from US Vice President JD Vance.

The attack has raised concerns about the global food supply chain and the potential for price increases in Africa and the Middle East. The shutdown of grain terminals at Novorossiysk could lead to higher prices for wheat exports, affecting many countries that rely on Russia's Black Sea ports.
