UN Warns Record Heat Could Push 50 Million into Poverty and Hunger

The United Nations has issued a warning that record heat could push nearly 50 million people into hunger and poverty worldwide. The El Nino phenomenon is forecast to reach record levels, bringing severe drought and potentially exacerbating existing food shortages.

The World Food Programme (WFP) estimates that El Nino could lead to acute hunger for tens of millions by the end of this year, while the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) warns of climate change's impact on summer and winter crops. This threatens tighter supplies and higher food prices globally.

The global cereal price index has risen 3.4% in one month, with wheat prices increasing 5.8% due to concerns over disruptions to Black Sea exports and extreme weather in major producing countries. Corn prices have also surged 3.6%, while sugar prices gained 5.6% due to prolonged heat in the European Union and El Nino's impact in Asia.

Falling water levels have disrupted key waterways like the Danube and Rhine, further increasing the risk of supply chain disruptions.
