Uniper Secures 30 TWh of Gas from Equinor in 15-Year Deal
Germany's Uniper has signed a significant gas import deal with Norway's Equinor, marking a shift in Europe's energy landscape. The 15-year agreement will see Equinor supply over 30 terawatt hours of gas to Uniper annually from 2027 until 2041. This represents nearly 3% of Germany's annual gas imports and solidifies Norway as the continent's top supplier, replacing Russia after Moscow ended most energy ties with Europe following its invasion of Ukraine.
The deal comes as Uniper seeks to diversify its supply base and mitigate the risks highlighted by global conflicts and climate concerns. According to Uniper CEO Michael Lewis, 'This long-term agreement is an important step for the future of Europe's energy system.' The partnership aims to promote the development of natural gas with lower emissions, capitalizing on Norway's reduced carbon intensity.
The deal highlights Equinor's growing importance as a reliable supplier of low-carbon energy. 'This agreement highlights the strong demand for reliable, long-term gas supplies from the Norwegian continental shelf,' said Equinor CEO Anders Opedal.
