Uniper Secures Long-Term LNG Deal from Ksi Lisims Project
German utility Uniper has secured a long-term agreement to purchase liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the Ksi Lisims project, planned for the northern British Columbia coast. The $30-billion facility will supply two million tonnes of LNG per year to Uniper for up to 20 years, with deliveries expected to begin in 2032.
The deal marks the first major long-term LNG supply agreement between Canada and Germany. Uniper's CEO Michael Lewis stated that Canada helps diversify Europe's energy supply and strengthens resilience against future disruptions.
The Ksi Lisims project is led by Houston-based Western LNG, alongside Rockies LNG and the Nisga'a Nation. The floating plant will export up to 12 million tonnes of LNG per year from Pearse Island, near the Alaska border.
Not everyone is in favor of this deal; Richard Brooks, climate finance director with Stand.earth, called it 'a major step backwards for climate action' for both Germany and Canada.
