Uniper Secures Long-Term LNG Deal with Canadian Project

Germany's energy security has received a significant boost as Uniper signed a 20-year long-term liquefied natural gas (LNG) deal with Ksi Lisims LNG, a Canadian project. The agreement involves the delivery of 2 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) of LNG to Uniper for up to two decades.

The deal is significant as it marks the first major long-term LNG supply arrangement between Canada and Germany. According to Michael Lewis, CEO of Uniper, this agreement 'is about far more than LNG.' He emphasized that by signing this long-term off-take agreement, Uniper is strengthening its portfolio with a reliable source of LNG from Canada.

The Ksi Lisims LNG project, located on Nisga'a Nation-owned land in British Columbia, will produce 12 million tonnes per annum of LNG using renewable hydroelectricity. This makes it one of the lowest-emission-intensity LNG facilities in the world with a pathway to net-zero emissions.

Uniper's CEO Lewis highlighted that this project combines security of supply, low-carbon hydropower infrastructure, and strong partnership, exactly the kind of long-term energy partnership Uniper seeks to build. The agreement comes after the Ksi Lisims LNG project obtained a 40-year export license from the Canada Energy Regulator two years prior.
