US and Iran Engage in Retaliatory Attacks on Vessels in Gulf of Oman

The United States and Iran have exchanged retaliatory attacks on vessels in the Gulf of Oman. The US has announced that it has 'permanently disabled' two oil tankers near Hormuz Island and another near the Strait of Hormuz, while also 'completely destroying' a third tanker in the Gulf of Oman.

The Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed to have launched several ballistic missiles at a US aircraft carrier and Navy destroyer that were patrolling in the region. The US account stated that the aircraft carrier and destroyer evaded multiple unprovoked Iranian attacks while no US personnel were hurt.

Afghanistan International reported that the IRGC targeted three oil tankers traveling through an unauthorized route in the Strait of Hormuz, as well as three vessels affiliated with the United States in other areas. DW stated that the IRGC claimed it launched 'several ballistic missiles' at a US aircraft carrier and Navy destroyer.

The 60-day ceasefire between the United States and Iran formally expired last month, and there are no signs of a new diplomatic agreement forthcoming. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth warned on social media that if Iran fires at US ships, 'we will destroy (and sink) their tankers.'
