US Becomes India's Top LPG Supplier Amid Global Energy Shift
Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri addressed the CII International Energy Conference and shared some surprising statistics on India's liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) imports. The US now accounts for about 67% of India's LPG imports, a significant shift from earlier government plans to source only 10% of the country's requirements from the US.
This change follows an effort to diversify energy supplies, and Puri noted that some were skeptical about relying on the US when nearby suppliers in the Gulf could have met India's needs. However, due to the conflict in West Asia, India was forced to adapt and has now seen the US become its primary source for LPG imports.
Before the crisis, India imported around 60% of its LPG requirements, with approximately 90% coming via the Strait of Hormuz. At the peak of the crisis, Indian oil marketing companies ramped up their cumulative daily production of LPG from 34,000 metric tonnes to 55,000 metric tonnes, helping to offset the impact of lower imports.
