US Becomes Top Oil Producer, Surpassing Previous Records
The United States has become a top oil producer in the world, surpassing any country's previous record of crude oil production. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, national production averaged a record 13.6 million barrels per day (bpd) in 2025, up 3% from the previous year.
Texas led the country with 5.75 million bpd, accounting for 42.3% of national production. The Permian Basin in West Texas and southeastern New Mexico contributed significantly to this output, producing 48% of all U.S. crude oil in 2025. If Texas were a country, it would rank as the world's fourth-largest oil producer, ahead of Canada and Iraq.
The Gulf Coast supplied 73.7% of U.S. crude oil production, while the East Coast produced just 0.4%. The top four areas - Texas, New Mexico, the Gulf of Mexico, and North Dakota - supplied 81.3% of national output, with each producing more than 1 million bpd.
