US Blockade Halts Iran Oil Exports Through Strait of Hormuz
A US naval blockade has succeeded in cutting off Iran's main source of foreign-currency earnings by limiting its oil exports through the Strait of Hormuz, according to Reuters.
For the first time on record, Iran has gone about seven weeks without shipping meaningful crude exports through the strait, which is a major chokepoint for global oil supplies.
The blockade, implemented in response to Iran's retaliatory attack on US forces in Jordan, has effectively severed one of Tehran's main revenue streams. This marks a significant departure from previous sanctions imposed by the US and other countries, which have failed to substantially impact Iran's oil exports.
