US Blockade Halts Iran's Oil Exports Through Strait of Hormuz
The United States has imposed a naval blockade on Iran, severely restricting its oil exports and cutting off a vital source of foreign currency revenue. The blockade, which was renewed on July 14, has halted Iran's crude oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz for nearly seven weeks.
Tehran's main remaining oil customer, China, is already being impacted by the declining supply of Iranian oil. Offers for September and October deliveries have declined, while some Iranian crude is currently available at higher prices rather than the steep discounts that previously attracted Chinese independent refiners.
The disruption has put Iran's budget and foreign exchange reserves under further strain. Analysts caution that Tehran may have to rely more on local monetary financing if oil revenue declines for an extended period of time, which could aggravate inflation predicted by the IMF to be close to 70% this year.
