US Blockade Weakens Iran's Grip on Hormuz Amid Escalating Tensions

The war between the US and Iran has entered its seventh month, with tensions escalating in recent weeks. The US blockade on Iranian oil exports has nearly brought it to a complete halt, while the Houthis' gains at Bab el-Mandeb are putting pressure on Saudi Arabia's oil routes.

According to reports, an Iranian commercial vessel was hit off Qeshm Island in the Strait of Hormuz earlier this month. One person was killed and three others were wounded. The UK Maritime Trade Operations agency reported that a vessel had been struck by an unidentified projectile while transiting the strait.

The US has limited success in loosening Iran's grip on the Strait, but its economic pressure is taking a heavy toll on Iran's economy, driving up prices and creating longer lines at gas stations. Despite this, Iran shows no signs of backing down and instead appears prepared to escalate wherever it can.

The Houthis' capture of Al-Mokha on the Red Sea coast has given them control over the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, significantly improving their ability to block Saudi oil shipments. Saudi Arabia's options are limited, and all available courses carry significant costs and uncertain outcomes.
