US Bonds Plummet Amid Oil Price Surge
The US bond market experienced a sell-off on Tuesday as rising oil prices fueled inflation anxiety. The S&P 500 fell 0.5%, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 105 points, or 0.2%. Technology stocks were among the heaviest weights on the market.
The ongoing sell-off in US government bonds is a concern for investors. The yield on the 10-year Treasury rose to 4.76% from 4.75% late Monday, while the yield on the 2-year Treasury increased to 4.37% from 4.34%. These rising yields signal that investors are demanding a higher return from Treasurys due to growing government debt.
The US debt surpassed $40 trillion two weeks ago, highlighting the risk associated with government borrowing. Higher bond yields indicate higher borrowing costs on mortgages and other loans, which can weigh down investments and make it more difficult for businesses to expand.
