US-Bound Oil Tanker Hit in Cyberattack Amid Rising Tensions
The VL PROSPERITY, a massive oil tanker with a capacity of 2.3 million barrels, was targeted in a cyberattack on August 7, 2026.
While sailing from Egypt's Sidi Kerir port towards the United States, the ship's communications were disrupted for 30 hours, leaving it vulnerable to potential risks.
The attackers allegedly infiltrated the engine-room systems, reducing cooling flow and increasing engine speed, as well as disabling fuel and engine oil tanks.
No group has claimed responsibility for the incident.
Some Russian-language media outlets have linked the attack to a direct confrontation between the Resistance Front and the US, suggesting that the message is clear: US assets in international waters are not immune from cyber threats, and monitoring of oil routes will continue.
