US Cracks Down on Iran with Crippling Economic Sanctions
The US is escalating its sanctions pressure on Iran as tensions between the two countries continue. Despite failed military operations, the Trump administration plans to impose crippling economic measures on Tehran. Last week, President Donald Trump vowed to inflict severe pain on Iran, following remarks by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent that Washington would introduce measures 'never seen before'. The US, along with the UN and EU, has imposed various sanctions since the late 1970s over Iran's nuclear program, human rights abuses, and support for militant groups. These sanctions have frozen Iranian assets abroad, leaving Tehran unable to access them.
The latest sanctions target Iran's covert oil fleet, shipping insurers, organizations, and individuals accused of facilitating weapons procurement and digital exchange operations. The US Treasury Department has sanctioned over 1,000 individuals, vessels, and aircraft since Trump began his second term. However, the measures also impact numerous countries and organizations, including China, which accounts for 80% of Iran's oil exports.
The US is seeking to ease tensions with Beijing ahead of an expected meeting between Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping later this year. Washington and its allies are concerned that China could restrict exports of critical minerals needed for advanced technology manufacturing. The US Treasury Department has warned two major Chinese banks could face secondary sanctions if Iranian funds pass through their systems.
