US Cuts Off Iran's Economic Lifeline as Oil Shipments Plummet
The US Treasury Department has launched Operation Economic Outcast, a new phase in its campaign against Iran. This follows previous operations targeting Iran's military capabilities and commercial networks that move oil to China through shell companies.
Economic pressure is mounting on the Iranian regime as the rial falls to a record low, inflation approaches 70%, and the economy contracts by 5.4% this year. Oil shipments have fallen from an average of 1.4 million barrels per day in 2025 to roughly 534,000 barrels per day in August.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent's speech signals a new phase in the campaign, with economic pressure moving beyond containment and toward the incapacitation of the IRGC. The US is targeting key channels that allowed Iran to weather earlier sanctions, including China's role as the main buyer of Iranian oil.
