The US military has destroyed five Iranian oil tankers in the Gulf of Oman and near Kharg Island. This is part of an effort to weaken Iran's economic lifeline, with eight crude tankers targeted since Saturday.

Turmoil from this war has pushed Brent crude oil prices above $100 a barrel today.

The US Central Command announced the destruction of the Iranian oil carriers, but there is little discussion around the future of US military presence in the region. Reducing troop levels could signal weakness to Iran and adversaries like Russia and China.

In retaliation for the destroyed tankers, Iran targeted US troops stationed at an air base in Jordan.

The UK has announced a ban on imports from Jewish settlements in the Israeli-occupied West Bank. This move aims to pressure Israel over settlement expansion, which the UK argues undermines the two-state solution.

Canada and France have also imposed sanctions, intensifying international pressure on Israel. Israel retaliated quickly with the announcement of the closure of the British consulate in East Jerusalem.

The Smithsonian Institution head, Lonnie G. Bunch, announced yesterday that he would step down from his role at the end of the year. Bunch has spent nearly four decades with the organization and has been a target of criticism from President Trump. Trump called for a comprehensive internal review of eight Smithsonian museums in August 2025 and accused the National Museum of American History of 'extreme political activism' in July 2026.

Bunch denied any insinuation that his departure was influenced by pressure from Trump, citing his goal to encourage Americans to embrace ambiguity and recognize that America is a complicated, multifaceted nation.
