US Dollar Surges Amid Escalating Middle Eastern Tensions
The US dollar has reached its highest point in nearly two weeks due to rising oil prices and renewed hostilities in the Middle East. The dollar index, which measures the greenback against a basket of currencies including the yen and euro, rose by 0.11% to 99.79 on Wednesday.
This increase in the dollar's value comes as Brent futures and US West Texas Intermediate crude prices surged due to growing tensions between the US and Iran. The price of Brent futures is up 1.15% at $95.74 a barrel, while WTI crude is 0.85% firmer at $91.05.
Kumiko Ishikawa, senior FX analyst at Sony Financial Group, stated that 'continued vigilance is needed over the situation in the Middle East today.'
The New Zealand dollar weakened by 0.8% against the greenback to $0.5844 on Wednesday, its lowest point since August 13, despite the central bank raising its official cash rate by 25 basis points.
