US Dominates Global LNG Market with Record Exports

The United States has cemented its position as the world's leading liquefied natural gas (LNG) exporter, supplying 93 percent of global LNG growth in 2025, according to the Energy Institute's Statistical Review of World Energy 2026.

In 2025, U.S. LNG exports surged by 27 percent to 147 billion cubic meters (bcm), surpassing Qatar's exports by a third. Global LNG trade as a whole expanded by 6.5 percent in 2025.

The report highlights the significant shift in the global energy landscape, with the United States transforming from a major net importer of oil and gas to a significant net exporter over the past two decades. Advances in horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing have unlocked large-scale shale production, enabling the country to meet growing U.S. energy demand.

U.S. total energy supply increased by 2.2 percent in 2025, with oil remaining the largest component at approximately 39 percent and natural gas accounting for around 35 percent of the total.
