US Dominates LPG Imports in India with 67% Share

The US has become India's largest supplier of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), accounting for around 67% of its imports. This significant shift was announced by Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri on August 7.

Initially, the government had planned to import about 10% of its LPG requirements from the US as part of a broader strategy to diversify energy sources and strengthen supply security through global partnerships. This decision was made independently and not in response to concerns over disruptions in key global energy shipping routes like the Strait of Hormuz.

The minister noted that India's LPG import pattern has changed significantly since then, with the US now supplying a substantial majority of its imports. The development reflects India's focus on long-term energy security through initiatives such as expanding domestic exploration and building resilient energy infrastructure.
