US Economic Threats Fail to Intimidate Iran, Officials Say

Iranian officials have dismissed US President Trump's threat to crush Iran economically, calling it 'economic terrorism' and saying that years of US sanctions have failed.

The country's parliamentary speaker, Mohammad Baqer Ghalibaf, said Trump's threat of an 'economic D-Day' shows Washington is unable to prevail militarily.

Ghalibaf claimed the US has entered into a cognitive war and economic war with Iran because it cannot handle the country in a hard military war. This comes as diplomatic efforts to revive peace talks are stalled, and a 60-day memorandum of understanding expired days ago.

The US blockade remains in place, and Iran is heavily restricting traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial oil waterway. The US has extensive sanctions on Iran that make international trade with Western countries impossible.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent threatened even more secondary sanctions on nations that do business with Iran. Bessent said Iran will face 'the greatest coordinated economic isolation in the history of the world.'
