US Energy Giants Eye Venezuela's Billions
Venezuela's oil minister, Paula Henao, announced new deals between Venezuelan state-owned companies and US energy giants SLB (formerly Schlumberger) and Hunt Oil Company. These partnerships aim to boost Venezuela's oil production, which currently stands at around 1.2 million barrels per day.
SLB has already signed a deal with the Venezuelan government, while Hunt Oil is also looking to invest in the country. However, experts caution that significant challenges lie ahead for US companies operating in Venezuela. 'You just don't know if you're going to get nationalized,' said David Goldwyn, president of Goldwyn Global Strategies.
The US energy industry is taking a cautious approach due to concerns about potential sanctions and the risk of asset seizure by the Venezuelan government. Despite these risks, SLB's deal with Venezuela is seen as a significant step towards reviving the country's oil sector.
