US Energy System Proves Resilient Amid Global Disruptions

The global energy market has been put to the test as months of disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz have left countries scrambling for emergency measures. However, the US has proven to be more resilient due to its robust energy system, which was built on decades of investment, technological innovation, and infrastructure development.

According to the American Petroleum Institute (API), record oil and natural gas production, strong refining capacity, and a vast pipeline network have helped cushion Americans from the disruptions seen elsewhere. In 2025, US crude oil production reached a record 13.6 million barrels per day (bpd) and is forecasted to increase to 14 million bpd in 2027.

The API credits horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing for transforming US energy production by unlocking more resources from wells while making rigs more productive. This innovation has enabled companies like those in the Permian Basin to extend their horizontal wells beyond two miles, with some reaching as far as four miles.
