US Expands AI, LNG, SMR Cooperation with ASEAN, Boosting Indo-Pacific Ties

The United States has outlined plans to expand cooperation with Southeast Asia in artificial intelligence (AI), liquefied natural gas (LNG), and small modular nuclear reactors (SMRs). This move aligns with India's rapidly expanding civil nuclear ambitions and broader Indo-Pacific technology partnerships.

Speaking after Secretary of State Marco Rubio's participation in the 59th ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting, U.S. Ambassador to ASEAN Kevin Kim emphasized the importance of advancing technologies like AI and data centers in Southeast Asia. He announced the U.S.-ASEAN AI SPARK initiative, which will provide financial and technical support for American AI exports in the region.

On energy cooperation, Kim highlighted Washington's $1.5 billion investment in an investment platform to facilitate the buildout of energy security infrastructure across the Indo-Pacific. The United States aims to work with Southeast Asia by providing access to the American LNG market development and deploying U.S. grid technologies.

The focus on SMRs is a strategic priority, according to Kim, who described them as 'a growing industry in the United States' with a critical role in supplying energy in the future. The U.S. push comes as India accelerates its own nuclear energy program, with recent enactments like the SHANTI Act opening the civil nuclear sector to private and foreign participation.
