US Food Prices Rise as Grain and Diesel Costs Surge
Food prices are on the rise in America as rising grain and diesel costs put pressure on farmers, food producers, and retailers. The price of corn and wheat has climbed to its highest level in over three years due to wars, higher energy costs, and difficult weather conditions disrupting agricultural markets.
Corn is used as a major livestock feed, meaning sustained increases can eventually raise production costs for meat, dairy, eggs, and packaged foods. Wheat, on the other hand, is used in bread, pasta, and other staples.
The Iran war has put additional pressure on fertilizer markets because the Strait of Hormuz is an important route for agricultural inputs. Shipments began recovering following a June ceasefire agreement but flows remained below pre-war levels as shipping and production infrastructure continued to face disruptions.
