US Forces Clear Hormuz Sea Mines as Iran Sets Conditions for Reopening
The Strait of Hormuz has seen some movement after months of disruption, giving oil traders reason to reassess the risk premium attached to crude. US forces say they have cleared Iranian sea mines from internationally recognised shipping lanes, while Iran has indicated that it could restore wider maritime traffic if Washington meets conditions prepared by Tehran.
The removal of mines does not automatically mean commercial shipping has returned to normal. Mohsen Rezaei, secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, said Tehran was preparing a list of conditions for reopening the Strait of Hormuz. He also mentioned that Iran and Oman had agreed on a potential shipping corridor that would pass through their territorial waters.
Under this proposed arrangement, ships could use a designated central channel if Washington accepts Iran's conditions. Tehran has previously linked a full reopening to issues including the US blockade, sanctions, and compensation.
