US Freight Market in Turmoil as Iran Conflict and Tariffs Bite
The US freight market is experiencing significant changes due to two major events: the conflict involving Iran and upcoming tariff deadlines.
Saudi crude oil flows to the US have completely halted, with zero shipments reported on August 6. This disruption has cut off a supply line that American refiners and fleet operators relied on to anchor diesel costs.
The market impact is already showing up at the pump and in carriers' cost structures. Brent crude, the international benchmark, rose 3.9% to $82.55 a barrel in the most recent session, according to Transport Topics reporter Damian J. Troise.
A second clock is ticking: the US has committed to applying 50% tariffs on a fresh basket of Canadian-made goods on August 19 if no trade agreement is reached. This deadline is approaching with less than two weeks remaining.
