US Futures Market Sees Wild Fluctuations Amid Crop Weather and Geopolitical Uncertainty
The US futures market saw significant changes on Monday, August 17, with various grains and livestock experiencing price fluctuations. December corn prices rose by 5 3/4 cents per bushel, while November soybeans increased by 17 cents. In contrast, December KC wheat declined by a quarter of a cent, and September Chicago wheat fell by half a cent. The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 178.09 points, with the US Dollar Index down 0.140.
At mid-morning, the soybean market surged higher, along with soybean oil. Corn prices remained firm, while wheat markets climbed back towards unchanged levels but ultimately fell by a dime from morning lows. The livestock complex traded higher at Monday's start, with October live cattle up $0.48 at $219.35 and September feeder cattle increasing by $0.70 to $335.25.
The upcoming Cattle on Feed report release on Friday may influence the market. Crop weather and geopolitics are likely to remain key drivers of price in the coming days, with typical late-summer seasonal pressure potentially affecting corn and soybean markets.
