US Gold Prices Plummet as Stronger Dollar Dampens Demand
Gold prices in the US declined on July 31 as a stronger US dollar reduced demand for the precious metal. The international benchmark spot gold price fell 1.1% to $4,055.41 per troy ounce, while US gold futures slipped 1.2%. Despite the day's losses, gold is still set to post its first monthly gain in five months, rising about 1.7% in July.
The stronger dollar made gold more expensive for holders of other currencies, weighing on prices. Investors also assessed the Federal Reserve's interest rate outlook and inflation expectations, which have been supported by higher oil prices in recent weeks.
Bullion retreated on Friday, but expectations that the Fed could eventually ease monetary policy have helped support gold prices throughout July. Market participants will continue to monitor upcoming US economic data, inflation readings, and comments from Federal Reserve officials for further clues on the interest rate outlook.
