US Gold Reserves Under Scrutiny Amid Calls for Independent Audit
Despite official reports stating that the United States holds 8,133.5 metric tons of gold, valued at approximately $261.5 million troy ounces, financial expert Mike Maharrey argues that these figures may not be accurate. According to government records, about 147.3 million ounces are stored at Fort Knox, while the remainder is held at other facilities.
Maharrey claims that the lack of an independent audit raises concerns about transparency and accountability in the country's gold reserves. In a recent interview on Fox News with Jesse Watters, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that Fort Knox's gold is 'present and accounted for,' but Maharrey counters that this assertion does not replace the need for an external examination.
The expert highlights that audits are essential to detect honest mistakes, verify records, and maintain public confidence. He notes that virtually every business managing valuable assets relies on regular external audits, and it is puzzling why institutions responsible for billions of dollars in assets resist independent verification.
