US Gold Surges Near $4,500 Amid Treasury Move and Dollar Weakness
The US gold market experienced a significant surge on August 19, 2026, as prices rose by more than 3% in response to an unexpected announcement from the US Treasury.
The move involved boosting the scale of liquidity support repurchase deals involving US government bonds of longer maturity, with individual transactions increased from $2 billion to a minimum of $4 billion starting from September 9.
This decision led to a decline in bond yields and a weakening of the dollar, making gold more appealing as an investment opportunity. Spot gold hit an intraday high of $4,499.20 per ounce before falling back to $4,487.91, resulting in a 3.6% increase.
US gold futures also finished up by 2.8% at $4,545.30, while silver saw a near-4% rise to about $65.80 an ounce.
