US Hits Back at Iran with Oil Tanker Strike
The US military launched strikes on three Iranian oil tankers on September 5, in retaliation for an attack by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps on two US Navy warships. According to the US Central Command, no US personnel were injured in the incident.
The strike targeted an American aircraft carrier and a guided-missile destroyer that had avoided the Iranian attacks. Two Iranian tankers near Kharg Island and Jask were disabled, while a third vessel was destroyed in the Gulf of Oman.
Kharg Island is a major hub for Iranian crude exports, and the nearby Strait of Hormuz is a critical route for global energy shipments.
